Prabal Gurung

Prabal RTW-Fall-2013
A look from the Prabal Gurung runway show.

Prabal Gurung is my new favorite designer. Not that I don’t still love my Chanel and Alexander Wang, but every time I see an outfit that I fall in love with on sight, it’s a Prabal Gurung. I am really drawn to his aesthetic.  He is destined to be in my closet and I want my wallet to agree without constantly reminding me it’s impossible… Mission Impossible.

There is no doubt that Prabal Gurung has arrived.  He launched his capsule collection for Target on February 10th, and according to Business Insider,  it almost sold out in one day. The 93-piece line has clothes, shoes, handbags, and jewelry. The collection is colorful but not overwhelmingly bright because there is black incorporated to give it some balance. The florals are more classic than trendy, and the line print is a bit abstract, but not enough to make you lose interest. Top the collection off with the bold jewelry if you still feel the need to kick it up a notch. Everything is meant to match and swap, and the possibilities are endless.

You can definitely see Prabal in his collection for Target, and it cost a fraction of his high-end line. Prices start a $19.99 and top off at $199.99? So if you always wanted a Prabal Gurung but couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars,  Target is giving you the opportunity to start your Prabal Gurung collection. If you’re a super-fan this nail art tutorial is inspired by one of his prints.

I need every single Prabal Gurung outfit I saw from his New York Fashion Week show. His Fall 2013 RTW collection is… Badass. Sorry, if there are any sensitive ears out there, but I was actually sugar-coating my description. There really is no room for political correctness here. The olive green military inspired outfits are embellished with fur, belt straps, and leather gloves, and the results are striking. The collection is inspired by Asgardа, a  Ukrainian martial art that has been recreated to accommodate a woman’s physique, and many of the outfits have authentic Ukrainian embroidery. The dresses are seductive, and feature strategically placed cutouts and thigh-high slits that flow seductively in white, olive green, royal blue, and red silk.  The message is clear; look but don’t touch. It’s hard and soft and reeks of attitude. There is very little in his 2013 Fall collection that I didn’t like. Check out the gallery of my favorites and tell me what you think about the collection.

Such Is Life

I must apologize for such a long absence. While I was fighting an infection, I was informed that my right wrist has to be replaced, so I have been a bit of a wreck for about two weeks. While I was using all of my mental strength and energy getting better, I completely missed New York Fashion Week. None of my brilliant blog ideas saw the light of day. The bright side is I got some voice recognition practice in as a result of the wrist problems. Yeah me!

I can’t wait to catch up on my writing assignments for Daily Glow and give some TLC to StylEnigma’s blog and Facebook page, both of which I am falling more in love with everyday.

I may have missed New York Fashion Week and  London Fashion Week, but  Milan Fashion Week shows are February 20 – 26, and Paris Fashion Week starts February 26 – March 6. So many exciting shows and I wasn’t invited to any of them. If I had to pick which show I could attend it would be London FW. I have visited England many times because my ex-husband is a bastard,  I mean English. I absolutely love that country, especially the fashion.

Thank You H&M: David Beckham & Guy Ritchie

davidbiggest

Imagine, videos (yes, plural) of David Beckham running around in his underwear. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better… I’m not sure it can. From the looks of it, he seems to be a handful; as in he looks like he can be mischievous. What did you think I meant? At some point I should be immune to Beck’s getting down to the bare essentials, but the bolt strikes hard every time. This thrill came courtesy of H&M and was directed by Guy Ritchie (eye candy!). I just want to say “thank you” to Madonna’s ex. I certainly wouldn’t have let him go.

David Beckham Thinking About How Fine He Is

To see all five David Beckham/Guy Ritchie videos, read OTRC’s piece where he talks about Twitter, Tom Cruise and of course, underwear.

So yummy…

I like a man who likes to change the way he looks and he isn’t afraid at all. He plays with different hairstyles and haircuts and his tattoo collection continues to grow. It’s like you’re getting a different man every few months or so. I thought I should include one picture of him playing football/soccer and then I changed my mind. I don’t know him from sports, I know him for being criminally gorgeous. I must have posted 10 pictures before I realized that only one had him covered. What can I say?

Project Runway Teams: What Do You Think Of The New Format?

I was already upset because Anthony Ryan won the second season of Project Runway All Stars instead of Uli or Emilio, and already put-off about Zac Posen replacing Michael Kors as a judge (not that I don’t like Zac, it takes a moment to warm up to change) because Kors has scheduling conflicts. Then, I see Zac and Tim Gunn on Good Morning America announcing that the designers are going to be working in teams. I am not excited about this format at all because it doesn’t give the viewer a chance to get to know the designers as individuals. I don’t remember any designer in the past 10 seasons of Project Runway getting excited over team challenges and the entire season is nothing but teamwork. So at a time when I would normally be getting very excited about a new season, I am anything but.

I can’t imagine the designers liked the twist either, as they are coming on the show to show what they can do and express their point of view, not worry about creating something that must be inclusive of others work and opinions as well. I don’t think that any of the past designers have worked with others and most creative types, (writers included) prefer to work by themselves.

The decision to make every challenge a team challenge this season stems from Heidi wanting the designers to work in a realistic environment. Apparently, successful designers do work with others. I don’t know why I thought that it was a one man/woman show where the designer delegates and the others fall in line. In an ideal world right?

The 16 contestants are divided into two teams, “Dream Team” and “Keeping It Real”. Moving on…

I was prepared to dislike the new format but Emily, who started the episode patting herself on the back and belittling others, sent down the ugliest creation in the western hemisphere. I don’t even know if you can call it an outfit and the judges apparently agreed because they sent her packing. I tried real hard to feel sorry for her but I couldn’t because she deserved to go home based on her attitude alone. There is no “i” in team, but there is an “i” in bitch. Bye, bye.

The Loser (The pictures don’t do this monstrosity justice)

The Winner

There is some real talent of course, (Daniel Esquivel won the challenge) and everyone is super-nice now, but there is bound to be some drama stitched in the midst of creation and runway. After all, they are competing for a 2013 Lexus GS 350, a spread in Marie Claire, a technology suite worth $50,000 from HP and Intel, and the opportunity to design an exclusive collection for Lord & Taylor. With all of that on the line and the pressure of having to work with others, this season might not be as bad as I thought.

Shades of Great: The 7 Hottest Sunglasses to Expect in Spring 2013 | Photo Gallery – Yahoo! Shine

These revamped cat-eye shades are adorable. I’m not sure I can pull it off but I would certainly take a stab at it.

Spring is just around the corner which means it’s time to take a serious look at what will be protecting our eyes from the sun’s welcome but harmful rays. I love sunglasses; they are the epitome of cool and I wear them all year-long. There are actually people walking among us that believe sunglasses should only be worn during warmer months. I refuse to acknowledge their existence. Who can deny that such a functional accessory is an absolute necessity?

Do any of these sunglasses expected to make an impact this spring move you?

While taking into account that someone, somewhere will love them, I think these are hideous. I would like to meet the person who can pull these off.

I love sunglasses with colored lenses. These are great for spring or a tropical beach…

These are a pair of pink Chanel‘s that I once had. I had an identical pair in black. It’s a sad story. Sigh…

Do You Have a Point to Make?

Project Runway (season 8)
Project Runway (season 8) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

My Saturday mornings start with Project Runway or America’s Next Top Model. I hear that ANTM will have male models and I can’t see that being the same (not that I don’t love the boys) so I might have to check out for the next cycle. I find Project Runway to be inspirational and I am rooting for Uli or Emilio to win Project Runway All Stars 2. I would have had a serious fit if Mondo didn’t win the first season of All Stars and I know I’m not alone. He was robbed in season 8. ROBBED!!

I have recently become obsessed with nail art which is what provoked me to start a Pinterest account. I found so many designs I liked that it was the only way to keep track.  Nail art is the biggest trend of 2012; I think that’s indisputable, with sheer clothing coming in second. With nail art, the rules are there are no rules; anything goes. Even those who consider themselves to be conservative are straying away from traditional colors and opting for striking visuals with bright colors, textures, and lavish embellishments. I remember when nail art was considered ghetto, but let’s not get me started on that.

Celebrities like Rhianna and Lady Gaga are showcasing pointy nails or “stiletto nails” so of course, the look is very popular, but I just can’t get on board. the reality that these nails could do double-duty as a weapon and a fashion accessory is not lost on me. And as beautiful as some designs are and as feisty as I am, no one is worth going to jail over.

That was until I saw these:

I know… and you should see the workmanship that Greg Salo put into creating these masterpieces. I typically wear short nails with dark polish, but recently I have started wearing them a bit longer in a square-oval shape in order to try some nail art tutorials. I once had a torrid love affair with long acrylic nails, but they’re just not practical for my lifestyle. The stiletto nails aren’t practical either, but in another life… I’ll just have to admire them from afar. What do you think about the long pointed talons that are trending?
